Ep 85 // Reflecting on Best Teaching Practices (& What to STOP Doing NOW!)

Inside This Week’s Episode: When you know better, you do better. And in the case of teaching: When you know better teaching practices, you teach better! Regardless of how many years you have been teaching, it’s never too early or too late to reflect on your own teaching. In this episode, we’ll uncover some best teaching practices to implement this year, and which ones to say goodbye to!

Dear Old Version of Me…

We all look back on your first few years of teaching and cringe at some of the things that we have done with our students.

Sometimes, we just don't know any better...until we do.

Now, I won’t waste your time telling you all about my mistakes, but I do want to share a few things that you can change about your teaching practices today to make a bigger impact with your students.

which of These teaching practices are you ready to cut out?

Here’s a Snapshot:

  • When we learn better ways to do things in the classroom, it’s our responsibility as evolving educators to replace outdated practices with ones that reflect best current teaching practices.

  • Having students raise their hands in order to participate creates passive learners. It may have been the way of things when we were in schools, but I’ll share some much more powerful alternatives that encourage whole-class participation.

  • Anyone else remember the anxiety that round-robin reading brought them as a kid? For struggling readers or shy students round-robin reading can leave a scar that has lasting effects that make them hate reading. Tune in for ways to instill a love for reading without causing anxiety.

  • This year, toss out the idea that the teachers are the only decision-makers of the classroom. Instead, learn how to create positive decision-makers in your classroom and as a result, future leaders.

  • It’s time to reduce the amount of paper copies you use in the classroom and opt for some digital-friendly options that will teach students valuable technology skills! I’ll share some simple digital options that you can begin implementing right away!
